It is mid-January evening and I was vegging out watching TV when the phone rings, it was Mark Welfare from Central RSOC phoned for a chat about cars and stuff and he mentioned that they were going to have a rolling road shoot out at PTS in Luton and he asked if we as a group would like to attend to add a bit more spice to the proceedings to which I accepted straight away.
After a month or so a final phone call was made to confirm all OK then next thing you know it is a Saturday morning and MK RSOC and Central RSOC are meeting up at junction 14 for a cruise down to PTS at junction 12 (mind you I would never of found the place on my own!!) some of the people did get lost and had to be talked in but finally we were all in the car park stuffing our faces with bacon rolls and cups of tea from the van provided by PTS (Thanks for that Tony).
Now it was time to go into the shop and sign the forms with details of the mods and the power you expected.
First up was Lee Eggleton with his S2 RST you could feel the atmosphere building and smell the anticipation and everyone wondering if their pride and joy would get off the rollers in one piece after the Technician had buried your right pedal through the floor pan!! Then it was time for lee to find out if his car could take it and of course it did producing a very healthy 213 BHP.
The big surprise of the day was Rollin Winters with his big turbo Escort RS Cosworth which whilst on the rollers had two people sitting in the boot who were witness to the car blowing off the gas extraction pipe from the exhaust with such force that all the signage in the back of the workshop all fell off the wall pus a person sitting on each front wing as well and this beast then went on to register 477BHP which was the highest output of the day from everyone who was present.
Mark Welfare’s 3dr looked superbly turned out with it’s 18 inch alloys and he was hoping for a really good power figure but someone must of hexed him as they just could not stop the car spinning on the rollers and after two attempts the best that was achieved was 274BHP this may well of been down to the fact that he had 18” wheels and 215/35/18 tyres.
Spencer Owens’ Small Turbo Escort RS Cosworth which looked fantastic in it’s white livery and was totally standard at the time of the rolling road shootout produced 241BHP not bad at all for a standard car. The only two naturally aspirated cars on the day were Anna Rose with her Fiesta RS1800 which produced 143BHP and Darren Pumfrett with his MK5 RS2000 and produced 153BHP.
A great day was had by all and we at MKRSOC would like to thank Central firstly for inviting us and secondly for organising this event and we will be looking forward to the end of season shootout, perhaps we might be able to round up a few more cars and see if we can beat the figures produced by our respective groups which were:-
MKRSOC= 1706 BHP (7 cars)
Central RSOC = 1282 BHP (5 Cars)
